Free Government Tablets for Veterans
Overview
Veterans have served our country and deserve access to the technology they need to stay connected, manage their health, and participate in their communities. Several pathways exist for veterans to obtain free or low-cost tablets, including federal Lifeline benefits and VA-specific programs.
This guide focuses on how veterans can access free government tablets, which programs qualify them, and where to find additional support. Whether you are a veteran yourself or helping a veteran family member, this information will help you navigate the available options.
Many veterans are unaware that benefits they already receive may qualify them for a free tablet. Veterans Pension, SNAP, Medicaid, and SSI are all qualifying programs for the FCC's Lifeline program.
Qualifying Programs for Veterans
Veterans may qualify for Lifeline through several pathways:
- Veterans Pension: This needs-based benefit for wartime veterans with limited income is a direct qualifying program for Lifeline.
- Survivors Pension: Surviving spouses of deceased veterans who receive this benefit also qualify.
- Medicaid: Many veterans, especially those with lower incomes, are enrolled in Medicaid. Read our Medicaid guide.
- SNAP: Low-income veterans receiving food assistance benefits qualify. Read our EBT guide.
- SSI: Veterans with disabilities and limited income who receive SSI qualify.
- Income-based: Veterans with household income at or below 135% of Federal Poverty Guidelines qualify regardless of program participation.
Note that VA disability compensation alone does not qualify you for Lifeline. However, many veterans receiving disability compensation also participate in other qualifying programs.
VA Resources for Technology Access
Beyond Lifeline, the VA has its own programs that may help veterans access technology:
- VA Video Connect: The VA has distributed tablets to some veterans to facilitate telehealth appointments. Contact your local VA medical center to ask about this program.
- VA Connected Care: This initiative aims to improve veterans' access to digital health tools and may include device programs.
- State Veterans Affairs offices: Some states have their own programs that provide technology assistance to veterans.
- Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs): Organizations like the VFW, American Legion, and DAV sometimes offer technology assistance programs.
How to Apply
The application process for veterans follows the same steps as any Lifeline application:
- Determine which qualifying program applies to you.
- Gather your required documents, including proof of your qualifying benefit.
- Choose a Lifeline provider in your state.
- Complete the application through the provider or the National Verifier.
- Submit your documentation and wait for approval.
If you qualify through Veterans Pension, you will need your pension award letter or a recent benefits statement from the VA.
